Power presses are core metal forming equipment. This guide explains their structure, three mainstream models and standardized operation precautions to prevent breakdowns and safety hazards.
Basic Introduction to Power Press Machine
Power press machines are precise universal equipment with high efficiency for shearing, punching, bending, riveting and forming. High pressure deforms or fractures metal blanks to manufacture finished parts.
Presses are powered by motors via belt and gear reducers to drive working assemblies, which exert forming force on workpieces. The three types of working assemblies are screw mechanisms, crank linkages and hydraulic cylinders.

Three Main Types of Power Press Machine & Performance Features
- Crank Press (Mechanical Press): For mechanical presses, the motor drives the flywheel via V-belts. Gears and a clutch actuate the crank-slider mechanism to lower the slide and punch. After stamping, the clutch disengages and the crankshaft brake stops the slide near top dead center.
- Screw Press: No fixed bottom dead center. Supports single, continuous and inching strokes for multi-blow forming of large forgings. Impact force drops as workpiece deformation increases. Fully enclosed frame cuts vibration, requiring no heavy foundation. Versatile for forging, blanking and deep drawing with simple, low-cost construction.
- Hydraulic Press:Driven by hydraulic cylinders to deliver massive, constant pressure throughout the entire stroke. Ideal for deep drawing, powder compacting, and heavy-duty forging of thick plates with stable speed control.

Precautions for Power Press Operation
1. Staff Training & Fault Reduction
Improper operation and incorrect die setting are the primary causes of machine damage and downtime. Standardized training for operators and die setters ensures standardized workflows and effectively reduces downtime.
2. Daily Lubrication & Cleaning
- Pre-shift lubrication: Lubricate all brake rotating shafts of the controller each shift. Every day before work, inject an appropriate amount of No.20–30 mechanical oil into connecting rod ball heads and lubricate the clutch once with an oil gun.
- Post-shift cleaning: Thoroughly clean the whole machine before shutdown every shift.
3. Full Inspection Before Startup
- Mechanical parts: Check all fasteners and replace missing external components. Inspect the clutch, springs, belts, brakes, slide blocks, locking blocks, locking rings and the wear & precision of crank guide rails. Inspect and adjust connecting bolts between the machine body and worktable as needed.
- Lubrication system: Verify all lubrication devices work normally.
- Electrical system: Check wires for breakage and aging, and test the normal operation of motors, electromagnets and all electric control components.
4. Safety Management Rules
Form targeted and practical safety operating procedures according to machine types and processing requirements, and provide necessary on-the-job training and safety education. Users and operators must strictly follow the safety instructions provided by the manufacturer for proper machine operation and maintenance.
5. Standard Safety Operating Specifications
- Startup preparation: Check controllers, clutches, brakes, safety guards and crank-slider mechanisms before startup. Do not run the machine with faults, and never dismantle or damage safety devices. Clear all sundries off the worktable to avoid falling objects causing injury or accidental slide movement triggered by switches. Conduct a no-load test run before formal production, and only start processing after confirming all parts work normally.
- Die area operation: Use dedicated tools to pick and place workpieces. Never reach hands into the die opening, and do not place tools on the dies. Keep feet away from foot pedals when adjusting workpieces or removing stuck parts.
- Multi-person cooperation: Assign a unified commander with clear signals. Start the machine only after confirming all partners have left the hazardous area.
- Normal shutdown: Cut off power immediately after operation completion or sudden power failure. Reset the controller to the clutch neutral gear and engage the brake.
- Maintenance & die assembly/disassembly: Cut off all power, gas and hydraulic supplies and stop the machine completely before maintenance, adjustment, die installation or removal. Place supporting blocks under the slide and hang warning signs near the machine start switch.
